A Usability Test of M2 Interactive

Introduction

A usability test was conducted by Jason Gerbes, Joshua Son and Paul Lee to investigate the usability of M2 Interactive, an Augmented Reality application. We aimed to discover any usability issues that the application may have by observing users of the target demographic interacting with the app.

What is the purpose of this research?

We are investigating Human Computer Interaction theory in relation to an interaction device to learn something about the usability of technology, and also to learn appropriate ways to research in this area. We have chosen the M2 Interactive application as our interaction device.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (commonly abbreviated to AR) is a digital technology which overlays digital information on real world imagery. An AR system generates a composite view for the user that is the combination of the real scene and a virtual scene generated by the computer.

The virtual scene generated by the computer is designed to enhance the user’s sensory perception of the virtual world they are seeing or interacting with. AR is currently used in entertainment, military training, engineering design, robotics, manufacturing and other industries (Webopedia.com, 2015). An example of AR, seen above, is an app that can translate foreign signs in-line on the user’s smartphone display.

What is M2 Interactive?

M2 Interactive is an Augmented Reality smartphone application developed by Luminary Promotions. It works in unison with the January 2015 issue of M2 magazine to provide the user relevant Augmented Reality content. M2 Interactive 'markers' are placed throughout the magazine to signify that a page has corresponding AR content.

M2 Interactive enables interactive Augmented Reality content to be projected over pages of an M2 magazine using a smartphone running an appropriate version of Android or iOS. Some examples of the AR content in M2 Interactive are shown below.
